FALL ARMYWORM ATTACKS KITGUM DISTRICT

The deadly but little understood crop pest, poses a threat to food security and livelihood of thousand households as it ravages maize crops in Kitgum district.
A preliminary calculation estimates it has affected nearly 170,000 hectares (ha) of maize crops. There have been reports of the attack of the worm from Sub-counties of Palabek, papa, Lacani, Kica ber and Paddy. Maize is the third most important cereal crop in Kigtum district after Simsim and cassava. It accounts for 9% of the total food grains production in the district.
By the time infestation was detected, it had already become malignant/deadly. Susan Aber, a former of Chakwa village in Lacani Sub-county took up maize cultivation for the first time this year. She dug a bore well and was convinced that the return from maize would be better they any other crops. But hardly had the seeds snouted, she saw some worms slowly colonizing his farm. “I detected them one morning there was no traces of them the previous day. I think they landed at night”, she narrated. Within two months, the worms affirm grip on her farm taking away 30% of her maize crop.
Uncertainly whole over the district, other farmers report the presence of this unseen insect. According to the district pest control 0fficer when contacted said control measures are being taken and very soon his office will come up with the clear information and solution to the pests.
